Programs
The innovative programs, implemented by the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education, prepare students at Jewish Day Schools, academies, and Yeshivot for the challenges and opportunities of our global society. Our goal is to make certain that every facet of education in our schools is of superior quality, so that students can acquire the skills they will need to excel in the years ahead.
CIJE Programs
Both the SuccessMaker and Waterford programs, developed by Pearson Learning, are currently enhancing the learning environment of more than twenty-one thousand students. Students are receiving personalized academic attention, daily assessment of progress, and ongoing identification of strengths and weaknesses. The SuccessMaker and Waterford programs present learning activities for student reasoning and responses and retain progress records throughout the course of study. Principals and teachers have reported remarkable gains in students achievement in both the classroom and on standardized tests.
CIJE is fully cognizant of the great need for improvement in the areas of science, mathematics, and technology. In response to that need, CIJE is designing and installing modern, state of the art science laboratories in elementary schools. In addition, each science specialist receives inquiry based science lessons specifically planned for students in Grades K-5.
Excellence 2000, E2K, creates a process in which students deal with the subject matter through a balanced combination of research activities and in depth understanding of the related mathematical and scientific area. The aim of this combination is to develop curiosity, openness, and original, critical thought that will influence students’ abilities in other subject areas as well. The essence of the program is the process and not the result. As of September, 2009, the E2K program will be implemented in more than seventy schools.
With emerging technologies, schools have the opportunity to tap valuable resources around the world.
Recent educational research has demonstrated the positive impact which interactive whiteboards have in the classroom. Interactive whiteboards benefit students involvement, learner motivation, and knowledge retention. Teachers benefit through increased student involvement, streamlined lesson preparation, and enhanced lesson materials. CIJE has installed more than two hundred SMARTboards in various schools. All faculty members in these schools are being trained on the use of SMARTboards in their subject areas, both Judaic and secular.
The Tal Am CAL (computer assisted learning) program is being designed to supplement and complement the existing Tal Am Hebrew language program, which is utilized in many schools. Research has shown that the use of Computer Assisted Instruction as a supplement to traditional, teacher directed instruction produces student achievement superior to student achievement attained by traditional instruction alone. To date, there is no digital courseware aligned and spiraled with the curricula available to Jewish Day School students and teachers. After the beta testing is completed, initial implementation is being planned for September, 2009.
