Excellence 2000
(E2K - Grades 5-9)
Unique in its concept, E2K teaches students a methodology for problem solving, focusing on the process of intuitive thinking and creative reasoning, rather than on the product. E2K teachers are trained both in New York and Israel to modify their usual roles as dispensers of facts and theories and to become facilitators in student centered classrooms. Teachers learn to transform the environment of their classrooms, enabling students to take center stage and utilize their knowledge and intellect. Instructional approaches emphasize hands-on learning and integrate mathematics, science and technology. The curriculum is designed in modules or units of learning, emphasizing the connection between the scientific world and daily life experiences
Middle and high school students from sixty-eight schools are significantly improving their mathematics and science skills via the E2K program. Students’ interest and scientific literacy are being improved. Pedagogical skills are being enhanced. A greater level of excellence will be pervasive throughout the schools in all subject areas. A culture where children are motivated to learn, think and reason is being created.
Significant staff development seminars are needed to train educators to properly implement the E2K program. In addition to the mandatory seminars, there are frequent staff meeting and schools are visited and advised by CIJE staff, who are veteran science and math instructors and possess a vast amount of expertise in the areas addressed by E2K.
In addition to the regular classroom lessons, the Excellence 2000 program includes various supplementary extracurricular activities to increase student motivation. Teachers and students participate in enriching and stimulating programs at the Buehler Challenger and Science Center. Students are successfully participating in “International virtual competitions.” During the 2007-8 school year, CIJE piloted a joint effort of participation in the Gildor Science Project which took place in Israel in July, 2008. The Moriah School represented CIJE and placed third among all competing schools. The tremendous success of our E2K students attested to the dedication of the teachers and motivation of our students.
